POSITION SUMMARY

· The Executive Director of State Government Relations (ED) serves as Grant Thornton?s representative on The Accountants Coalition (TAC), the organization that advances the accounting profession?s policy initiatives at the state level. TAC also monitors proposed state legislation and regulation and works with third parties to enact or defeat initiatives based on their impact on the public, the markets, the profession and the firm. TAC is comprised of representatives from the five largest public accounting firms in the United States.

· The ED works with other TAC members to develop state-focused public policy positions and ensures that the firm?s positions are well-articulated to key internal and external stakeholders. The ED also works with PPEA team members to enhance the firm?s political action committee and grassroots efforts.

· The ED focuses on enhancing the firm?s profile and position among state policymakers through ongoing meetings and by cultivating relationships with critical staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· TAC Representation and Issue Development/Education:

- Work cooperatively with other TAC representatives on advancing TAC?s strategic goals.

- Research, write, develop and present public policy positions assumed by Grant Thornton and the profession for TAC, leveraging internal subject matter experts as appropriate (e.g., legal, human resources, ethics, licensing, and public policy).

- Monitor profession-related developments to identify emerging trends and/or opinion shifts with potential implications for the firm.

- Work with designated Grant Thornton leaders to ensure that positioning on critical policy issues is well-understood. Develop and maintain infrastructure to communicate these issues to internal stakeholders.

- Lead effort to develop and maintain a grassroots platform within Grant Thornton, working with the PAC-Grassroots Manager, to complement the outreach coordinated through TAC.

· Relationship-Building

- Develop relationships with key state policymakers, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), state attorney generals, state legislators, governors, state regulators and state CPA societies, among others.

- Act as the firm?s point of contact and facilitate activities related to the profession?s congressional outreach program.

· Support the National Managing Principal of Public Policy with federal and state government affairs.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

· Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree (e.g., J.D.) preferred; CPA a plus.

· Minimum of 15 years of collective full-time work experience; minimum 5 ? 10 years experience as a state lobbyist or as an advocate of state policy. Knowledge of state compliance regulations required.

· Extensive senior level experience in the financial industry sector; familiarity with the most pressing policy issues faced by public accounting firms.
